Roller bearings represent around 2/3 of the total worldwide bearings sales value. The variety of these roller bearings is wide, going from small cylindrical roller bearings (CRB) to large taper roller bearings (TRB), from multi-roll bearings to spherical roller bearings (SRB) and passing through certain types of slewing rings. Of course also the applications are quite various, from automotive (truck and heavy vehicles) to industrial, from steel to wind mills, from mining to large installations (just to mention few ones).

The common aspect of all this variety of bearings is the presence of rollers that – as for balls in ball bearings – allow the relative movement between the parts and adjust the load transmission in the proper way, i.e. radially for cylindrical rollers, radially and axially for taper rollers and along variable direction for spherical rollers.

Steel is 100Cr6 steel, i.e. the typical bearing steel. Also 100CrMn6 steel (for diameters larger than 40 mm) and case hardened steel (wherever application requires special resistance to fatigue and/or wear) are also available.

The profile of these rollers, even in the case of the simpler cylindrical ones, may be “micro” designed in order to optimize the load distribution on the tracks of bearing rings, minimize the friction and the starting torque, optimize the energy efficiency of the final application and maximize the overall bearing performances.

One element of differentiation between bearings balls and rollers is in the fact that last ones do not meet one unique sizes standard, but variety of sizes is so high that basically each roller for one single customer is almost one unique product on the market. This requires a great manufacturing flexibility to cope with demand and a very good process capability to avoid that manufacturing issues of process capability may compromise the products conformance and, as consequence, both the qualitative and economical competitivity.

ICT offers also special steel rollers designed for CARB (Compact-Aligning-Roller-Bearing), i.e. very special product who can merge advantages of different types of bearings: they are space-saving like a needle roller bearing, self-aligning like a spherical roller bearing and axially free like a cylindrical bearing.

CARB rollers are long and thin, with special unique profile that enable to handle heavier loads than comparably sized standard roller of other bearings. The length of roller (together with special design of the bearing itself) allows that almost the whole roller width is used to carry a load. The roller movement sideways during rotation avoids any type of misalignment, i.e. a very dangerous occurance in demanding applications that can severely shorten the life of the bearings.

Black Oxiding Treatment

ICT can provide any type of steel rollers (as well as of steel balls) with a revolutionary treatment for the electrochemical deposition of nanoparticles smaller than 0.3 micron that considerably reduce the friction coefficient of two surfaces in contact. This very thin lubricating layer looks perfectly dry, in black color, and can cut down to 0.01 the friction coefficient between two surfaces. It makes unnecessary the use of any oil or grease lubrication in application.
