ICT widen its offer to manufacturers who finish Si3N4 balls for bearings industry
Silicon nitride balls are used in full ceramic and hybrid-ceramic bearings in applications where ultra high-speed rotation is required. They have an insulating property which is highly effective in preventing electrolytic corrosion: this makes silicon nitride balls the optimal solution as a countermeasure against premature bearing failure in electric motors. Furthermore, in the last 10 years silicon nitride balls have been used more and more in EV bearings for their properties of low density and high precision.
ICT can now offer silicon nitride ball blanks, i.e. the sintered balls used as input for grinding and lapping operations required to get finished ceramic balls for bearings. Blanks are available with following characteristics:
- From 0.8 mm up to 50.8 mm diameter (2 inches);
- In class I and Class II, as for ASTM F2094;
- Produced with HIP (Hot Isostatic Pressure) or GPS (Gas Pressure Sintering) technologies (for both classes I and II);
- With reduced stock allowance vs finished ball size (in order to minimize the processing times in grinding and lapping);
- With certification of all the geometrical and mechanical properties.
High values of fracture toughness (above 6.0 MPa * square root meter), flexural strength (higher than 900 MPa, as for three points method) and low or nihil porosity can be achieved with the proposed ICT blanks: this results into higher resistance to fatigue and wear of finished product, with reduced risk of balls failure even in the toughest applications.
Competitiveness of pricing and excellence of service are also ensured.
